説明
Use exclamatory sentences to show strong feeling, especially surprise, admiration, or shock.
A common pattern is "What a lovely room this is!" Here "What" starts the exclamation, "a" is needed because "room" is a singular countable noun, "lovely" describes the room, and "this is" finishes the clause.
If the noun is uncountable, drop the article, as in "What terrible weather!" Use "How" before an adjective or adverb, as in "How cold it is!" Japanese often uses "なんて〜" or "〜だなあ" without changing the noun phrase, but English must choose the right pattern and article.
感嘆文は、驚き、感動、ショックなどの強い気持ちを表すときに使います。
たとえば "What a lovely room this is!" では、"What" が感嘆の始まり、"a" は単数の可算名詞 "room" に必要な冠詞、"lovely" は部屋を説明する形容詞、"this is" は文を完成させる部分です。
名詞が不可算なら冠詞は入れず、"What terrible weather!" のように言います。"How" は形容詞や副詞の前で使い、"How cold it is!" のようになります。日本語では「なんて素敵な部屋なんだろう」「ほんとに寒いなあ」のように言えますが、英語では冠詞と語順を正しく選ぶ必要があります。
例文
- What a nice cake! なんておいしそうなケーキなんだろう。
- What terrible weather! なんてひどい天気なんだろう。
- What a lovely room this is! なんて素敵な部屋なんだろう。
- How cold it is! なんて寒いんだろう。
- How could you forget my birthday?! どうして私の誕生日を忘れられるの?!
- I can't believe how busy the station was. 駅がどれだけ混んでいたか信じられない。
よくある間違い
Japanese learners often say "What beautiful day!" by leaving out "a" before a singular countable noun. The natural English is "What a beautiful day!" Another common error is using "How" before a noun phrase, for example "How a nice idea!" The correct form is "What a nice idea!" For "How," use an adjective or adverb instead, such as "How beautiful it is!" or "How quickly she runs!"
日本語話者は、単数の可算名詞の前の "a" を落としてしまい、「What beautiful day!」のように言いがちです。自然なのは "What a beautiful day!" です。もう一つよくあるのは、名詞句の前に "How" を置いてしまうミスで、「How a nice idea!」のようになりがちです。正しくは "What a nice idea!" です。"How" は名詞ではなく、形容詞や副詞の前で使い、"How beautiful it is!" や "How quickly she runs!" のように言います。
