before/after + clause

説明

Use "before" and "after" to show the order of two events. You can put the time clause first or second. In future meaning, the "before/after" clause usually uses the present simple, not "will." In "I will call you after I get home," "I will call you" is the main action, and "after I get home" tells you when it happens. Japanese often says "帰ったら電話する" or "〜する前に," so the idea is similar, but English keeps the time clause in the present form.

例文

  • I wash my hands before I eat.
  • After I finish work, I usually go for a walk.
  • What do you do before you go to bed?
  • Don't send the email before you check the name.
  • She called me after she got home.
  • I will call you after I get home.

Japanese learners often say "After I will finish my homework, I will go out." This is wrong because the before/after clause is a time clause. Use the present simple there: "After I finish my homework, I will go out." The same rule applies to "before": say "before I leave," not "before I will leave."
