Past Simple for Completed Events

A2 Eiken Pre-2 Elementary

subject + past simple verb

Explanation

Use the past simple for an event that finished in the past. The time is often clear, like "yesterday," "last night," or "last week."

For example, "I watched a movie last night." Here, "I" is the subject. "Watched" is the past simple verb, and it shows the action is finished. "Last night" tells us when it happened. In Japanese, you often say "〜た" for this meaning, but English must change the verb form.

Examples

  • I watched a movie last night. 昨夜、映画を見ました。
  • She visited her grandma yesterday. 彼女は昨日、おばあさんを訪ねました。
  • Did you finish your homework? 宿題は終わりましたか。
  • We didn't go out because it rained. 雨が降ったので、私たちは外出しませんでした。
  • He bought a new phone last week. 彼は先週、新しい電話を買いました。
  • They arrived at the station at 7 p.m. 彼らは午後7時に駅に着きました。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often use the present perfect with a finished past time, for example: "I have watched a movie last night." This is wrong. Say "I watched a movie last night." Use the past simple when the time is finished and clear.
