Place Using "at," "on" & "in"

A1 Eiken 3 Beginner

"at" / "on" / "in" + place

Explanation

Use "in" for something inside a space or container. Use "on" for something touching a surface. Use "at" for a point, a place, or a general location.

Look at the sentence "My phone is on the table." "My phone" is the thing we are talking about. "is" tells us its state. "on" shows the position. "the table" is the surface. Japanese often uses one word like "に" or "で" for many locations, but English chooses a different preposition for each kind of place.

Examples

  • My keys are in my bag. 私の鍵はバッグの中にあります。
  • The book is on the desk. 本は机の上にあります。
  • We are at the station. 私たちは駅にいます。
  • Is your brother in the room? あなたのお兄さんは部屋にいますか。
  • She is not at home today. 彼女は今日は家にいません。
  • The children are on the bus. 子どもたちはバスに乗っています。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often use "in" for every place. For example, "I am in the station" can be unnatural in English. Use "I am at the station" for the station as a place. They also often say "on home" or leave out the preposition, but English needs one preposition: "She is at home."
