noun + defining relative clause with omitted object pronoun

説明

Use this when the relative pronoun is the object of the clause.

In "The book I bought yesterday is on the table," "The book" is the noun, and "I bought yesterday" tells us which book. Inside that clause, "I" is the subject and "the book" is the object, so "that" or "which" can be left out. Japanese often uses this pattern naturally, because Japanese relative clauses do not need a pronoun. But in English, you can only leave the pronoun out when it is not the subject. If the pronoun is the subject, you must keep "who" or "that": "The man who lives next door is my uncle."

例文

  • The book I bought yesterday is on the table.
  • She is the friend I told you about.
  • This is the hotel we stayed in last summer.
  • Do you remember the café we met at?
  • I don't like the movie you recommended.
  • The keys I lost yesterday were in my bag.

Japanese learners often omit the relative pronoun even when it is the subject of the clause.

Wrong: "The man lives next door is my uncle."

Right: "The man who lives next door is my uncle."

In English, you can leave the pronoun out only when it is the object.
