Explanation
Use articles carefully with place names. Most city and country names do not take "the": "Tokyo" and "Japan". But some names do take "the": "the UK", "the United States", "the Philippines", "the Alps", and "the Thames".
In "We went to the UK last summer," "We" is the subject, "went" is the past verb, "to" shows movement, and "the UK" is the country name that needs "the". Japanese does not use articles in this way, so learners often add "the" too often or forget it where English needs it.
地名の前では、冠詞をよく見て使います。多くの都市名や国名は "the" をつけません。たとえば "Tokyo" や "Japan" です。ですが、"the UK"、"the United States"、"the Philippines"、"the Alps"、"the Thames" のように "the" が必要な名前もあります。
"We went to the UK last summer." では、"We" が主語、"went" が過去の動詞、"to" が移動先を示し、"the UK" が "the" 付きで使う国名です。日本語ではこのような冠詞を使わないので、学習者は "the" をつけすぎたり、逆に必要な場所で落としたりしやすいです。
Examples
- I live in Tokyo. 私は東京に住んでいます。
- She is from Japan. 彼女は日本の出身です。
- We went to the UK last summer. 私たちは去年の夏、イギリスに行きました。
- Have you ever been to the Philippines? フィリピンに行ったことはありますか。
- They hiked in the Alps. 彼らはアルプスでハイキングをしました。
- I didn't see the Thames when I was in London. ロンドンにいたとき、テムズ川は見ませんでした。
- Visiting Africa was amazing! アフリカ旅行は最高だった!
Common Mistakes
Japanese learners often add "the" before every place name, because Japanese has no articles: "I went to the Austria last year." → "I went to Austria last year." They may also forget "the" in names that need it, such as "the UK" or "the Alps".
日本語には冠詞がないので、地名の前にいつも "the" をつけてしまうことがよくあります。例: "I went to the Austria last year." → "I went to Austria last year." さらに、"the UK" や "the Alps" のように "the" が必要な名前で落としてしまうこともあります。
