Explanation
Use the present simple for habits, facts, and fixed schedules.
Use the present continuous for actions happening now or for temporary situations.
In "She is cooking dinner now," "She" is the subject, "is" helps make the present continuous, and "cooking" is the verb with "-ing." The word "now" shows that the action is happening at this moment. Japanese often uses the same verb form in both cases, so English needs the verb form and the time word to show the difference.
習慣、事実、決まった予定は現在形で言います。
今していることや、一時的な状況は現在進行形を使います。
たとえば "She is cooking dinner now." では、"She" が主語、"is" が現在進行形を作る助動詞、"cooking" が "-ing" 形の動詞です。"now" があるので、今この瞬間の動作だと分かります。日本語では同じ「作る」で表せることが多いので、英語では動詞の形と時間を表す言葉で区別します。

Common Mistakes
Japanese learners often use the present simple for something happening now, like "She cooks dinner now." Correct: "She is cooking dinner now." They also sometimes use the present continuous for a habit, like "I am usually getting up at 7." Correct: "I usually get up at 7." Use present simple for routines, and use present continuous for actions now or temporary situations.
日本語の影響で、今していることでも現在形を使ってしまうことがあります。たとえば "She cooks dinner now." は不自然で、正しくは "She is cooking dinner now." です。逆に、習慣なのに現在進行形にしてしまうこともあります。"I am usually getting up at 7." ではなく、"I usually get up at 7." が正しいです。習慣は現在形、今だけの動きや一時的なことは現在進行形で言います。
