Present Continuous Tense for Actions Happening Now

A2 Eiken Pre-2 Elementary

am/is/are + -ing

Explanation

Use the present continuous for an action happening now. It often goes with words like "now" or "at the moment."

Look at "I am cooking dinner now." "I" is the person doing the action. "am cooking" shows the action is in progress, and "now" tells the time. Japanese often says "今、夕食を作っています," but English needs both the be verb and the "-ing" form.

Examples

  • I am cooking dinner now. 今、夕食を作っています。
  • She is reading a book. 彼女は本を読んでいます。
  • Are you waiting for the bus? バスを待っていますか?
  • We are not watching TV right now. 私たちは今、テレビを見ていません。
  • They are playing soccer in the park. 彼らは公園でサッカーをしています。
  • My brother is talking on the phone at the moment. 私の兄は今ちょうど電話で話しています。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often drop the be verb and write "I studying now." Wrong -> right: "I am studying now." Another common mistake is using the base verb after be: "She is play tennis." -> "She is playing tennis."
