Intransitive Verbs

A1 Eiken 3 Beginner

subject + intransitive verb (+ adverb/prepositional phrase)

Explanation

Intransitive verbs do not take a direct object. That means you do not put a noun after the verb to receive the action.

In "The baby sleeps," "The baby" is the subject and "sleeps" is the verb. There is no object after "sleeps." You can add words like "well" or "at the station," but those tell how or where, not what receives the action.

Japanese often uses a short sentence too, but English still keeps the verb alone when it is intransitive.

Examples

  • The baby sleeps. 赤ちゃんは寝ています。
  • My train leaves at 7:30. 私の電車は7時30分に出発します。
  • She arrived late. 彼女は遅れて到着しました。
  • Do you work on Saturdays? 土曜日に働きますか。
  • We did not stay long. 私たちは長くいませんでした。
  • What happened after the meeting? 会議のあと、何が起きましたか。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often add a direct object after an intransitive verb.

Wrong: "The train arrived the station."

Right: "The train arrived at the station."

Also remember that some English verbs need a preposition, not a direct object.
