「the other」と「the others」の使用

A1 英検3級 初級

the other + singular noun; the others + plural noun

説明

Use "the other" when you mean the remaining one in a set. Use "the others" when you mean the remaining people or things.

Look at "I have two cups. This cup is clean, and the other cup is dirty." Here, "this cup" names one cup, and "the other cup" means the second cup. English shows the difference with singular and plural form, but Japanese often just says "もう1つ" or "残り". So remember: one left is "the other", and more than one left is "the others".

例文

  • I have two cups. This cup is clean, and the other cup is dirty. コップが2つあります。これはきれいで、もう1つは汚れています。
  • We bought four oranges. One is for lunch, and the others are for later. みかんを4つ買いました。1つは昼食用で、残りはあとで食べます。
  • Which seat do you want, this one or the other one? どちらの席がいいですか。こちらですか、それとももう一方ですか。

  • There are two tickets. I have mine, so you can take the other one. チケットは2枚あります。私の分はあるので、もう1枚を取ってください。
